Meet Your Grief Therapist in Overland Park, Kansas

Talking to someone after a loss is hard to imagine considering that finding words at all can be difficult. True healing begins when you are ready to talk about your loss. I want to understand your loss and your experience. I’m Heather, an attachment-based grief therapist in Overland Park, KS who works with people who are ready to begin to feel like themselves again.

This May Sound Familiar

  • You are feeling all alone and unsure of what to do next.

  • The loneliness is so strong that you are afraid to go out because you feel alone even when you are with people.

  • No one understands what you are going through and you feel angry at everyone because they don’t get it and their entire world hasn’t fallen apart.

  • Nothing feels safe.

  • People think you should be over it because some time has passed, but for you time has stood still.

  • You avoid your emotions because you are afraid if you start to cry, you may never stop.

  • You are trying to be strong for yourself or for others without the energy or desire to do it.

  • You can’t concentrate or sleep and you are exhausted from just existing without your person.

HOW GRIEF THERAPY IN OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS CAN HELP

I have experienced my own grief through losing my father as a young child and losing my husband while having young twins. I went back to school to begin my chapter two – my life after loss. Through my own experience, I have been able to rebuild my own stability and sense of security.

It takes time and I know that people do not want to hear that. You want immediate relief from the despair you are feeling. Through our work, you will be able to begin piecing yourself back together. Over time, you will get to where you feel like a sense of yourself again.

We will work together to figure out how to tolerate your uncomfortable feelings so that you are not consumed by them. I can help you explore how the loss has changed your sense of purpose and help you discover a new sense of self. We will discuss your anger rather than trying to eliminate it. It’s okay to be angry because none of this is fair.

Together we will rebuild you a sense of stability where you can feel safe again without your person.

My approach to Grief Therapy

I use attachment-based therapy to explore grief. Attachment-based therapy is helpful in grief because loss affects our deepest sense of connection, safety, and belonging. Grief changes the way we relate to others. I will help you understand what you are feeling because your emotions help to communicate your needs.

MY VALUES

CONNECTION

Relationships matter; grief can be the pain of disrupted connection and healing can include finding new ways to remain connected to what – and who – we have loved.

HONORING THE LOSS

Healing doesn’t require letting go or forgetting. The relationship can continue to have meaning even as life changes.

HOPE

Not necessarily the hope that things will return to the way they were, but the possibility that life can eventually feel meaningful again

AUTHENTICITY

Creating a space to be honest about what you are really experiencing – even when your emotions don’t fit what you think you SHOULD be feeling

MEANING

Making sense of your experience and discovering ways to carry what mattered into your next chapter

GROWTH

Helping you explore who you are becoming after loss rather than trying to return to who you were before it happened

Grief Therapy with Me IS:

  • Creating a safe place to grieve without judgment, expectations, or a timeline

  • Honoring the relationship and the loss rather than trying to erase the pain

  • Making sense of what you are feeling – even when your emotions feel confusing or contradictory

  • Understanding how loss has changed you, your relationships, and your sense of who you are

  • Learning to trust yourself again

  • Moving forward without having to move on

Grief Therapy with Me IS NOT:

  • A place where I’ll tell you that everything happens for a reason

  • Focused on getting over your loss. I don’t believe you ever get over it, but learn to live with the loss

  • Forgetting the person you lost

  • Rushing your healing. There is no timeline for grief, and you don’t have to be “better” before you’re ready

  • Pretending everything is okay

More Personally

I am a mother to twins and a loyal friend. I enjoy playing volleyball, board games, and binging crime documentaries. Playing sports helps me to feel connected with my body. Spending time with my friends and family makes me feel grateful and thankful – two things I wasn’t sure I would be able to feel again.

People have been trusting me with their stories from a young age. I am the person they share with who just listens without giving advice, judgment, or fear it will be repeated.

Grief is something I have had a close relationship with from a very young age. I’ve learned to embrace my grief and move through it rather than push it away. There are many kinds of losses and I have experienced several – from the loss of people to other losses that include pets, relationships, friendships, empty nesting, jobs, and dreams. I love doing what I do and look forward to working with you.
